Kitchener, Ont. – The Owen Sound Attack opened their 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Kitchener Rangers on Friday night. Pierce Mbuyi scored a late power play goal and Ryerson Leenders stopped all 29 shots he faced for his first career shutout as a member of the Attack.
After a 20 minute pre-game ceremony, the Attack and Rangers got down to business for the first period of regular season play for both teams. In what could be described as a bit of a feeling out process, the two teams exchanged puck possession stints with both Ryerson Leenders and Jason Schaubel having to make some key saves at both ends of the rink. Despite some quality chances neither team was to solve the goaltenders and the teams headed into the first break knotted at zero.
The two teams began to take more chances in the second period, resulting in multiple power play opportunities for both clubs and some near misses. Once again the goaltenders were up to the task registering a clean sheet in the middle frame and sending the game to the third period still tied at zero. It took almost the entire third period but finally a team was able to break the deadlock with who else playing hero but Attack Captain Pierce Mbuyi scoring the winner on the power play after being left all alone in front of the net. The goal wouldn’t been possible without a great play at the line by Cole Zurawski, who moved the puck over to John Banks who found Mbuyi all alone and he made no mistake for his first of the year, giving the Attack the 1-0 lead and eventually the 1-0 win.
While Mbuyi played hero with the game winner, Leenders played hero several times throughout the game ensuring his team had the chance to win.
