RECAP: Schmidt leads the way on OA night, Frontenacs win in OT
Story of the Game: It’s game 68 out of 68 in Kingston tonight as the Frontenacs end their regular season against the visiting Brantford Bulldogs. While nothing can change in the standings, it’s an important night as we honoured our overage players Jax Dubois, Roman Schmidt, and Jacob Holmes for their contributions to the OHL in an impactful pre-game ceremony.
Scoring Summary:
1st Period
KGN 0, BFD 1
10:57 Ben Bujold (14) – Adrian Rebelo, Lawson Sherk
After Lawson Sherk won a faceoff in the offensive zone, Adrian Rebelo threw the puck towards the Kingston net from his blueline. The puck would bounce around before Ben Bujold jammed it in at the side of the net to open the scoring for the visitors.
KGN 1, BFD 1
15:51 Roman Schmidt (7) – Matthew Soto, Gabriel Frasca
How fitting that on a night where we celebrate our overage players, Roman Schmidt finds the back of the net? The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect took a slapshot from the right point and it found its way through a sea of bodies to even the game up at one a side before the first period would come to a close.
2nd Period
KGN 2, BFD 1
12:25 Gage Heyes (11) – Roman Schmidt, Quinton Burns
After a Roman Schmidt shot from the point was left on the doorstep, Gage Heyes was quick to pounce on the loose puck and chip it into the Bulldogs net to give the black and gold a 2-1 lead.
3rd Period
KGN 2, BFD 2
3:04 Calvin Crombie (14) – Luca Testa, Noah Nelson
After collecting a turnover in the neutral zone the Bulldogs came into the Frontenacs’ end with speed and on a two-on-one break. Calvin Crombie passed the puck over to Luca Testa who passed it back to Crombie for the tap in to draw the game back even.
KGN 2, BFD 3
4:46 Florian Xhekaj (32) – Patrick Thomas, Owen Protz
Just a minute and a half after tying the game, the Bulldogs quickly jumped ahead. Florian Xhekaj made a slick move just inside the blueline in the Frontenacs’ zone and sniped a wrist shot just under the bar to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage.
KGN 3, BFD 3
9:35 Tyler Hopkins (6) – unassisted.
With the Frontenacs scrambling to get back into the game and searching for the equalizer; Tyler Hopkins threw a shot towards the net that hit a couple bodies in front, causing a mad scramble. The puck squirted out to Hopkins who was calm, cool and collected unleashed a laser that went into the top corner to tie the game up at three a side.
Overtime
KGN 4, BFD 3
1:57 Roman Schmidt (8) – Gabriel Frasca, Tyler Hopkins
After a boneheaded penalty by Brantford’s Owen Protz, the Frontenacs found themselves on a powerplay at the start of overtime. On the ensuing man advantage, Gabriel Frasca teed up Roman Schmidt who blasted a one-timer into the back of the Bulldogs’ net to give Kingston a third consecutive overtime win, and a fourth win in a row overall to close out the regular season.
