Attack Win it in Six!
In 2011 the Owen Sound Attack entered Game 6 of their series on the road in London, searching for a gutsy win to close out their Opening round series. Tonight was no different as the Attack entered the Essar Centre up 3-2, looking for their first win on the road.
The Greyhounds would open the scoring just 4:11 in when a Colin Miller point shot was re-directed by Sergey Tolchinsky past Jordan Binnington. Despite being down 1-0, the Attack controlled a good chunk of the play and would eventually get rewarded when Zach Nastasiuk broke in shorthanded and roofed one past Matt Murray.
Gemel Smith had quite a series, tallying five goals and two assists in the previous five games and he would not stop there as he took a feed from Nastasiuk and buried it short side on Murray. Sault Ste Marie would draw even when Tyler Gaudet pounced on a loose puck and tapped it into the yawning cage.
It would be 2-2 heading into the 3rd and throughout the series, the Attack seemed to excel in the third period. At the 4:31 mark, Holden Cook would hammer home a fortuitous bounce off the end boards to give the Attack a 3-2 lead. It was back and forth action from there as the two teams traded chances, waiting for the other to make a mistake…and that happened. Nick Cousins, who had been stellar for the Greyhounds throughout the series threw a blind backhand pass through the middle of his defensive zone that deflected off an unsuspecting Greyhounds player. Artur Gavrus picked up the loose puck and fired it home blocker side to give the Attack some breathing room and a 4-2 lead.
The Hounds would press and add one late when Colin Miller’s point shot found the back of the net. But that would be it as the Attack would win a late defensive zone face-off to secure the 4-2 series win.
The Centennial Windows Three Stars were:
3) Colin Miller 1G,2A
2) Sergey Tolchinsky 1G
1) Jordan Binnington 34SV
