Attack Drop OT Decision to Spits
It was Pink in the Rink with the Attack on Sunday afternoon as they hosted the Windsor Spitfires.
Prior to the game, Darlene Shaw, proud mother of Attack Alumni and Stanley Cup Champion Andrew was on hand to drop the ceremonial faceoff puck. Darlene is a breast cancer survivor and Andrew’s work regarding fundraising for cancer research has been well documented. Just last spring, Andrew auctioned off his “Stanley Cup Stitches” for a healthy four digits, with all money going to cancer research.
A huge, heartfelt thank you to Darlene and her husband Doug for being on hand today.
The Spits defeated the Attack on Thursday night by jumping out of the gate quickly and they would do the same on this afternoon, scoring two goals just over one minute into the game. Cristiano DiGiacinto scored the first marker while Josh Ho-Sang tallied the second. A scary moment as the game was delayed almost 15 minutes when Spitfires goaltender, Alex Fotinos lay on the ice motionless. It was hard to tell what actually happened, however; Kyle Hope was given five minutes and a game for goalie interference. Dalen Kuchmey would take over in the Windsor crease.
After trailing 2-0 heading into the first intermission, the Attack roared back and took a 3-2 lead. Daniel Milne and Jaden Lindo each scored their third goal of the season while Gemel Smith tallied his 14th to give the home town team the lead heading into period three.
The Attack’s lead wouldn’t last long to begin the third as Remy Giftopoulos tied the game just 21 seconds in. The game wouldn’t stay tied for any length of time as Nick Ebert would slam home a rebound to give the Spits a 4-3 lead. Comebacks seemed to be the story of this game as the Attack would tie the game just five minutes later when Gemel Smith scored his 2nd of the game and 15th of the season on the powerplay.
The game would head to overtime where Trevor Murphy was the hero. His point shot found the back of the net to give the Spitfires a 5-4 win.
