Attack Lose OT Thriller 2-1 to Knights
The Owen Sound Attack did battle with their Midwest Division rivals the London Knights on Sunday afternoon at the Bayshore and this battle did not disappoint. The Attack and Knights went toe-to-toe for 60 minutes a game that was so good it needed overtime to decide it with the Knights coming away with the 2-1 victory. Jacob Julien and Easton Cowan had the goals for the Knights while Braedyn Rogers had the game tying goal for the Attack. In the goaltending battle Carter George had 42 saves performance, while London’s Aleksei Medvedev made 39 saves.
For the second consecutive afternoon the Attack played to a 0-0 first period draw with their opponent. The Knights carried the play early thanks to three consecutive power plays that saw the Attack shorthanded for 6 minutes of the opening frame. After the successful penalty kills the Bears found their stride pushing back and generating some quality offensive opportunities, narrowly missing on one, as Jake Crawford found iron but not net. The teams headed into the first period break noted at zero.
Period 2 would once again see both teams battle for every inch of ice, however, it was the Attack that was able to tilt the balance of play in their favour in the middle frame, consistently creating off the cycle and pinning the Knights in their own end, but unable to find a solution for Aleksei Medvedev. In fact it was the Knights who would break the deadlock just 6 seconds into a power play the Bayshore faithful were not fond of, when Jacob Julien tipped the point shot behind George, then beat the Attack goaltender to it, to bring the game to 1-0. A score that would hold until the break.
After two hard fought periods the third did not disappoint as the Knights and Attack provided the sellout Bayshore crowd with a great finsih. Both George and Medvedev continue their dominance in net, not giving their opponent the glimpse of an opportunity. The Attack did finally break through, when Braedyn Rogers blasted home his first of the season from the point on the power play with just over a minute left, igniting the roar in the Bayshore crowd and evening the score at 1. Overtime was needed with neither team able to find the goal ahead goal in the final minute. Despite a solid push in overtime, it was not the Attack’s night as Easton Cowan played hero for the Knights notching the overtime winner with just over two minutes remaining in the extra period.
The Attack will continue their 5-game homestead next week when they take on the Sarnia Sting on Wednesday, November 6 at 7pm, the Kitchener Rangers on Saturday, November 9 at 7pm for Hockey Fights Cancer night and finishing it off with another Investment Planning Counsel Sunday against the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday, November 10 at 2pm.
