Attack Can’t Slow Down Spitfires Soaring Offence
It was another tough outing for the Owen Sound Attack, as they surrendered eight goals to the Windsor Spitfires Sunday night, in a game that the Western Conference leading Spitfires claimed a 8-1 victory.
It was the final meeting between the teams for the regular season as the teams split the season series 2-2, though the rout on Sunday night definitely showed why Windsor is leading the conference. As the Attack were coming off a disappointing performance in Flint the Saturday night before, they found themselves chasing the game from the opening puck drop as Windsor played with pace and forced the Bears to play their style of game.
Owen Sound knew that it was going to be a much different Windsor team than the previous three meetings, as the Spitfires had loaded up at the trade deadline, but it was long tenured Spitfires doing the damage on Sunday. Windsor captain Matthew Maggio extend his goal scoring and points lead on the rest of the league, as he opened the scoring Sunday night, and add four assists to match teammate Jacob Maillet (2G, 3A) as two-thirds of the Spitfires top line were humming offensively all night.
From the Owen Sound end, Nick Chenard was back between the pipes, his first start since January 20th against London, as the Attack had been riding a red-hot Corbin Votary leading into the weekend. Much like Saturday night Owen Sound found themselves down a pair after the opening 20 minutes of play, but could not generate anything to threaten a comeback as Windsor kept the Attack’s scoring chances to a minimum. The lone bright spot on the night for the Bears was Matthew Papais spoiling the shutout bid as he banged home his 13th of the season late in the second period.
Owen Sound will have to show a short memory as they turn around and welcome the Niagara Ice Dogs to the Bayshore Wednesday night for a mid-week showdown. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the MacVicor and McComb Sutton Realty Attack Box Office by calling 519-371-7452 or going online at tickets.attackhockey.com.
