Attack Add Overage Papais from Ice Dogs
The Owen Sound Attack have acquired overage forward Matthew Papais from the Niagara Ice Dogs in exchange for a 2025 5th round draft pick.
After searching all training camp and preseason for a third overage player, Attack GM Dale DeGray pulled the trigger Tuesday afternoon on a deal that could pay dividends for Owen Sound. The deal is very similar to that of last seasons trade deadline acquisition of Nicolas Porco, an overage froward from Barrie. Much like how Porco brought a strong forecheck and leadership to the Attack, DeGray is hoping something similar can happen this season with Papais.
Originally a 7th round selection by the Guelph Storm in the 2018 OHL Draft, Papais returns to the Midwest Division after an offseason trade sent him from Guelph to Niagara. The Nobleton, ON native has played in all six games with the Ice Dogs this season, and though only recording a single assist, the forward is coming off a strong 2021-22 season with Guelph, where he scored 19 goals and added 21 assists. The game that Papais will bring to the Attack though goes far beyond the scoresheet, as he has proven to be a responsible two-way player, even spending some games as a dfencemen last year for Guelph.
Papais will join the team immediately, and could be an option for Greg Walters for Wednesday night’s game in Sarnia.
The Attack organization want to welcome Matthew to the organization and look forward to having him represent the team.
