GAME SUMMARY: Oil Kings shutdown by Blades
Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings were stymied 5-1 by the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday night at Rogers Place.

What was shaping up as a low-event first period between the Oil Kings and Blades that seemed destined for a scoreless tie at the buzzer, was turned on it’s head with a couple of late goals from the visitors.
Vaughn Watterodt staked Saskatoon to a 1-0 lead with 4:12 left in the first period after tipping in a Blake Gustafson point-shot.
Tanner Molendyk doubled the Blades’ lead with just over a minute left in the period after he was able to stuff home a loose puck at the side of the Edmonton net during a goal-mouth scramble.
In the second period, the Blades extended their lead to three at 10:31 after Watterodt was able to zip a shot from the right-circle just inside the near post for his second marker of the night.
Just 2:09 later, the Oil Kings were able to respond after Rhett Melnyk lifted home his seventh goal of the season during a scramble at the side of the Saskatoon net.
The Blades outshot the Oil Kings 11-5 in the middle stanza, thanks in large part to three successive power plays at the end of the period and maintained their two-goal advantage at the intermission.
Just over a minute into the third period, the Blades restored their three-goal lead as Brandon Lisowsky found the back of the Edmonton net from the slot just as a Saskatoon power play had expired.
In the final minute, Jayden Wiens capped the scoring for the Blades as he was able to nudge a loose puck over the Edmonton goal line.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 25 saves, while Austin Elliott made 18 saves for the win. Edmonton went 0-for-4 on the power play, the Blades were 0-for-4.
Next up, the Oil Kings welcome Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats to Rogers Place on Sunday for a Family Fun Sunday with puck drop scheduled for 4:00 P.M.
