The 2022-23 Edmonton Oil Kings Team Awards winners
Each season the Edmonton Oil Kings acknowledge the efforts of a number of their players for their contributions to the Club both on and off the ice. Below are the lists of Oil Kings awards recipient since their modern inception in 2008-09.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Being the most valuable player on a team is more than just scoring points or making saves. It’s motivating your teammates, sacrificing yourself to make plays or block shots, and making a difference that greatly impacts your team’s success from those efforts.
2022-23 Recipient: Gavin Hodnett

Gavin Hodnett presented Most Valuable Player by Oil Kings General Manager Kirt Hill
Gavin Hodnett (Winnipeg, MB) is the Oil Kings Most Valuable Player for the 2022-23 season.
Hodnett led the Oil Kings in scoring with 43 points (12G, 31A) in just 62 games played this season.
When it comes to the Oil Kings former first-round pick from the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, it’s been the consistency in which he has played with this season that has landed him with the Club’s most prestigious award.
As for any 16-year-old player in the WHL, there is an adjustment period and Hodnett was no different. After recording just four points (0G, 4A) in the first 15 games of his season, he returned from the 2022 IIHF World U-17 Hockey Challenge in mid-November ready to take over offensively and has gone on to put up 39 points (12G, 27A) over his last 44 games — nearly a 60-point pace over the course of a 68-game schedule.

KRISTIANS PELSS MEMORIAL AWARD
Kristians Pelss was the Edmonton Oil Kings 1st round, 19th overall pick in the 2010 CHL Import Draft. Born in Preili, Latvia, the speedy forward compiled 42 goals and 42 assists for 84 points in 126 games over two seasons for the Oil Kings. He played a key role in the Oil Kings 2011-12 WHL championship run where he had ten points in 17 games en route to an Ed Chynoweth Cup victory.
He went on to be drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 7th round, 181 overall in the 2010 NHL Draft and showed great promise as a player with the Oil Kings, as well as the Oilers minor league affiliates in Oklahoma City (AHL) and Stockton (ECHL).
Kristians was proud to wear the Oil Kings jersey and showed it every time he stepped out onto the ice. His passion for his teammates, his love of the game, and his work ethic were second to none. Kristians Pelss passed away on June 11, 2013 in Riga, Latvia at the age of 20.

2022-23 Recipient: Carter Kowalyk

Carter Kowlayk presented Kristians Pelss Memorial Award by Oil Kings Head Equipment Manager Rogan Dean
Carter Kowalyk (St. Albert, AB) is the 2022-23 recipient of the Oil Kings Kristians Pelss Memorial Award.
This award is handed out to the player who best exemplifies the traits of late Oil Kings forward Kristians Pelss, a former WHL champion with the Oil Kings and Edmonton Oilers draft pick. He was known for his commitment to hard work on the ice, as well as his dedication to be a great teammate and member of our community off the ice.
Kowalyk earned this award by being an emotional leader for the team.
Through his tenacious defending, physical play and never shying away from protecting his teammates, he has become the ultimate teammate.
This season, at just 17-years-old, he has proven to be an effective shutdown defenceman in the WHL and has often taken on the toughest matchups with the opposition’s top players while also always being one of the first players over the boards for a penalty kill.
Away from games, he has carried himself at a professional level by the way he prepares, takes care of his body and hones his craft in practices and video sessions with the coaching staff – by doing this, he has helped lead and guide a large contingent of first-year players and shown them what it means to be an Edmonton Oil King.

From minor hockey practices to reading visits at local elementary schools, Rhett is always enthusiastic at showing up and helping out.
Not only is Rhett constantly active in his hometown community, he is also involved in just about every community activation the Oil Kings host. Rhett joined us when we teamed up with the Edmonton Stingers (CEBL) to replace basketball nets in the local area surrounding Rogers Place, he lead a group of teammates during READ IN Week to read to multiple classrooms in the Greater Edmonton Area, he accompanied our team to a blood drive with the Canadian Blood Services encouraging fans to donate themselves and he headed up coffee delivery to full-time staff at OEG Sports and Entertainment as a thank you for all of their work on the Edmonton Oil Kings brand.
On top of all of this, he guaranteed support for Oil Kings locker room attendant, Declan, in his involvement with the Special Olympics Winter Games in Sherwood Park. Rhett brought his teammates to the Opening Event unveiling an art exhibit at Millennium Place, surprising Declan and posing for countless photos and autographs throughout the evening. Later that week, during the Games themselves, Rhett brought his teammates to show their support for Declan’s floor hockey team, cheering them on and taking photos and signing autographs once the event had concluded.
As captain of the Edmonton Oil Kings, Rhett leads us not only on the ice, but off it as well. Showing through action what the standard is for being a member of this organization, he embodies leadership and continually sets the example for his teammates to follow.
