Two goals from Schemitsch help crush Saginaw’s spirit
The Owen Sound Attack got back in the win column on Saturday night, taking down the Saginaw Spirit by a score of 5-2 thanks to a big night from defenceman Thomas Schemitsch.
Determined not to repeat a start like in Guelph on Friday, the Attack upped the pressure on the Spirit early.
Just 1:14 into the game they were able to draw a penalty, and while it expired without a goal they quickly capitalized.
Scoring for the 2nd time in as many night, Thomas Schemitsch put the Attack up 1-0 at 3:28 of the first with a snipe just under the cross bar. Petrus Palmu and Erik Bradford picked up the assists on Schemitsch’s 12th goal of the season.
The Attack continued the early onslaught, firing 16 pucks on Saginaw goalie Evan Cormier in the 1st period. But it was only the one goal by Schemitsch that found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes and Owen Sound went to the break up 1-0.
Owen Sound continued to press in the 2nd period, making it 2-0 just 4:06 into the frame.
Thomas Schemitsch made it a two goal night on a redirect from a a Jonah Gadjovich pass. Keenan Reynolds also assisted on the play, giving the rookie four points on the year.
Saginaw would eventually respond though.
Dylan Sadowy took advantage of a breakdown in the Attack zone to make it a 2-1 game with 16:06 gone in the middle period.
The goal came on just the 11th shot of the game for Saginaw, and appeared to give the Spirit some life.
The Attack had a golden chance to restore their two goal lead with under two minutes to play in the 2nd, but Daniel Milne was stymied on a penaty shot.
Cormier’s save on the Milne chance would send the Attack to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead.
On Friday night, when the 3rd period started, the Attack saw themselves surrender and early goal.
Saturday night was a different story however.
Just 11 seconds into the final frame, Jacob Busch took a pass from Daniel Milne and found a hole in the Spirit netminder to put the Attack up 3-1.
After Owen Sound’s 3rd goal, the game seemed to settle down and the play was mostly back and forth.
The teams played four on four twice in the frame, and the 2nd time resulted in a goal for Saginaw.
Dylan Sadowy picked up his 2nd goal of the evening with 12:24 gone in the final period to draw the Spirit within one.
The Attack answered right back though, and it came on a highlight reel goal from Daniel Milne with 3:55 left in the game.
Holden Cook ed a streaking Daniel Milne, who cut to the middle of the ice before rifling home a bar down snap shot to restore the Attack’s two goal advantage and make it 4-2.
Owen Sound would round out the scoring when Holden Cook fired the puck from his own slot, off of the sideboards, and into the empty net to give the Attack a 5-2 victory.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 44-23 for the Attack as Michael McNiven made 21 saves on the night.
Jarett Meyer was named the game’s Ryobi Tools Hardest Working Player while Saginaw’s Dylan Sadowy earned the honour of the Mac Taylor Corporation’s 3rd Star thanks to his two goal performance.
Daniel Milne’s one goal, two assist night was enough to garner him 2nd star honours, while Thomas Schemitsch was named the game’s 1st star with his pair of goal.s
