Attack Steal One In Mississauga !
Game 3 of the Ontario Hockey League Rogers Championship Series for the J. Ross Robertson Cup featuring our Owen Sound Attack and the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, was played at the Hershey Center in Mississauga Friday night. The Majors led the series 2-0.
Owen Sound 6 – Mississauga 5 Overtime !
In a game where a loss might put your team in a big hole, it would be a good idea to score first. Andrew Shaw in alone on a breakaway, went backhand, forehand and upstairs to beat Mississauga goaltender JP Anderson with his 9th goal of the post season at 5:17 of the first period and our Attack were letting the Majors know that they have lots left in the tank. Jay Gilbert had sent Andrew in on Anderson.
But penalties have haunted both teams this series and the Majors pushed back with two power play goals three minutes apart midway in the period. Rob Flick with a nice shot beat Attack netminder Michael Zador with his 7th at 9:21 and then Maxim Kitsyn scored with a floater of a shot at 12:29. 2-1 Majors.
And the penalty problem just wouldn’t go away. With Jay Gilbert in the Attack penalty box, Jesse Blacker ripped a shot wide of the net and off the glass. Robby Mignardi charged in and snapped up the puck, went backhand, forehand on Anderson and slipped his 13th through the pads shorthanded. Robby has an 8 game point scoring streak going. On the same penalty, the Majors took the lead once again when Devante Smith-Pellynailed his 10th at 14:24. The Majors were 3 for 3 on the PP at the time.
Our Attack closed out the first period with a PP goal of their own. Garrett Wilson deflected a point shot by Matt Stanisz at 18:56. Joey Hishon also assisted. 3-3 after one period of play.
Period two was mostly Attack. Outshooting the Majors 11-9, they outscored them 2-0. Roman Berdnikov fed Jay Gilbert a pass at the point. Jay’s shot deflected off Major Jamie Wise. Anderson couldn’t see it and Andrew Shaw ripped his second of the game at 11:20. An even strength goal !
Back on the special team, Mike Halmo backhanded his 4th of the post season. Berdnikov had done the dirty work getting and keeping possession before moving the puck to Matt Petgrave. Mike took it to the net and finished at 13:38. 5-3 Attack after two.
The third period was a copy of the second, only this time it was the Majors that scored the lone two goals. Brett Flemming whacked a screen shot that found the back of the Attack net at 1:37.
Shortly after, Joey Hishon sent Cameron Brace in on a breakaway, but Cameron was stopped by Anderson.
Things came close to unravelling at 14:38. A play around the Attack net was called, No Goal by the Referee standing behind the Attack net. After the video Referee review and the play being shown twice of the Hershey Center video, the play was changed to a goal by Smith-Pelly. Our BearRadio crew were livid as were the Attack. 5-5 at the end of regulation time.
Just 56 seconds into overtime, Matt Petgrave was the game hero hammering his 4th of the post season stick side on Anderson. Game four in Owen Sound Sunday afternoon at 4:30.
