Attack in Ottawa for Friday night match up
The Owen Sound Attack continued three game Eastern Conference road swing with a stop in the nation’s capital on Friday, Jan. 16.
Despite a two point night from Zach Nastasiuk and Kyle Platzer’s 50th point of the year, the Owen Sound Attack fell 4-2 to the 67’s.
Ottawa, owners of the league’s 4th best record at home, kicked off the scoring on a goal by Sam Studnicka with just over seven minutes gone in the contest.
After some back and forth action and chances by both teams, Studnicka was able to corrall a rebound and slide if underneath Attack starting goalie Jack Flinn to give the 67’s a 1-0 lead.
Flinn would turn aside 14 more 67’s shots in the 1st period as Ottawa took that one goal advantage into the 2nd period, with the Attack being stopped on all 11 of their shots on Liam Herbst in the opening 20 minutes.
Owen Sound would tie the game early in the 2nd period, after taking advantage of a big blocker save by Flinn to start a rush. Zach Nastasiuk picked up his 4th point of the road trip by scoring an unassisted tally that beat Herbst thanks to a big screen by Petrus Palmu.
The 67’s would quickly restore that one goal lead though, as Nathan Todd fired a slapshot into the top corner while the Attack were killing a powerplay.
Not to be outdone, Chris Bigras would even the score at 2-2 on an Attack powerplay with an absolute cannon of a slapshot. Bigras’ 13th of the season would come on helpers from Nastasiuk for his 2nd point of the night, and Kyle Platzer who picked up his 50th point of the year with the assist.
The teams would take that 2-2 tie into the 3rd period, and it would be the 67’s who broke it, scoring twice in 22 seconds to make it a 4-2 game.
Travis Konecny would score Ottawa’s 1st of the final period with 7:52 gone in the frame on a snpashot before Brendan Bell banged home a loose puck at 8:15 to make open up the two goal margin.
Those final two goals would be the difference, as the Attack could not rally a comeback in the final minutes to draw any closer.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 36-28 for the 67’s, while the home team also garnered two of the Mac Taylor Corporation Three Stars.
Ottawa captain Travis Konecny scored what would be the game winning goal in a 1st star effort while Sam Studnicka was named 3rd star with a one goal effort of his own.
Zach Nastasiuk’s two point night was enough to earn 2nd star honours.
The Attack will enjoy an off day on Saturday before returning to action on Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Hersey Centre against the Mississauga Steelheads. Puck drop on Sunday is scheduled for 2:00pm.
They will then return back to the Bayshore for a pair of home games next weekend, taking on the Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday before hosting Connor McDavid and the Erie Otters on Sunday, Jan. 25.
