ATTACK HARPOONED BY WHALERS
Two beauty hard working third period goals by Attack 2008 1st rounder Steven Shipley, were not enough to overcome a 3-0 deficit to the visiting Plymouth Whalers Wednesday night at the J.D. McArthur Arena.
r
Plymouths game winning goal, a shorthanded breakaway marker by left winger AJ Jenks, his 5th of the season, came at the 11:00 mark of the second period, but from then on it was a pretty even contest.
r
After two periods of play it was 3-0 Whalers yet our Attack were outshooting them 19-16. And the Attack must have had a bit of a rally talk during that second intermission. It was noticeable how they looked energized as they were about to start third period play. Especially the line of Joey Hishon, Steven Shipley and Bobby Mignardi. Plenty of jump as they waited to start the period.
r
Steven put his Attack on the board at 1:08. A skilled read of a play at his own blueline where he stole the puck and was off on a near breakaway. Able to keep the backchecker at bay just long enough to get a shot on net, Steven was hauled down as he lifted the puck over the catching hand of Whaler goaltender Matt Hackett.
r
Unfortunately a giveaway behind the Attack net led to a very quick goal by Plymouth’s Joe Gayner at 4:14 and it was a 3 goal deficit again.
r
Steven was back at 7:24 though. This time he took a pass at the Plymouth blueline and used his speed to split the defence and go in on Hackett alone. A deke left and it was a 4-2 game.
r
Try as they might, the Attack could get no closer and taking a penalty late in the game, the Whalers Garrett Meurs pumped his 2nd of the season behind Attack netminder Scott Stajcer at 19:33. Garrett is from Ripley, ON and had a large contingent of fans in Owen Sound to see him play.
r
Final score Plymouth 5 – Owen Sound 2. Final shots on net were 33-26 Owen Sound.
r
Plymouth Whaler center, 17 year old sensation Tyler Seguin, entered Wednesday nights game in Owen Sound leading the league in scoring with 18 points in 7 games including 11 goals. Lots of NHL scouts in attendance again. Tyler left with 2 more assists and now leads Windsor’s Taylor Hall by 3 points as the OHL scoring leader. Steven Shipley sure would have caught the scouts attention as well.
r
The 3 Stars of the Game were:
r
1st Star – AJ Jenks with 2 goals and an assist including the game winning goal.
r
2nd Star- Steven Shipley with 2 goals.
r
3rd Star – Matt Hackett with 31 saves.
r
r
The Kelsey’s Neighbourhood Bar and Grill Attacker of the Game was Steven Shipley.
r

The Harold Sutherland Construction Hardest Working Attacker of the Game was Keevin Cutting.
