Attack fall to Guelph
The Owen Sound Attack lost their 1st game in regulation this season, dropping a 3-2 effort in front of 2,935 fans at home to the Guelph Storm on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Despite leading 2-1 through 40 minutes of play thanks to a pair of 1st period powerplay goals, the Attack couldn’t hold on Garrett McFadden scored the game winner just over 10:00 into the 3rd period.
Owen Sound clicked on the man advantage in the opening frame, scoring on an Ethan Szypula backhander at the 8:08 mark before Daniel Milne was able to poke home a loose puck with just six seconds left in the period. Defensemen assisted on both of the goals as Damir Sharipzyanov helped out on both and Thomas Schemitsch and Connor Walters each added an assist.
Guelph’s Pius Suter had the Storm’s lone 1st period marker, as he scored on a breakaway after a pass from Noah Carrol at the 12:17 mark.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the 2nd period, but the Storm appeared to come to life, taking a 28-18 lead in shots after the Attack were up 12-10 after the 1st period.
The Storm used their powerplay in the 3rd period to tie the game and then take the lead, as Jason Dickinson tapped home a backdoor pass at 5:53 before McFadden scored his powerplay marker at 10:15. The two goals would be enough as the Storm completed the comeback over the Attack.
McFadden’s game winning goal earned him the Mac Taylor Corporations 3rd star of the game, while Damir Sharipzyanov’s pair of assists earned him 2nd star nods. The game’s 1st star was Guelph’s Pius Suter with a goal and an assist.
Owen Sound’s Ethan Szypula was named the Ryobi Power Tools Hardest Working Player of the Game for the 2nd time this year thanks to his one goal effort and tenacious forechcking.
Attack goaltender Jack Flinn was also solid on the night, stopping 37 of 40 shots on goal.
The Attack return to action on Sunday, Oct. 5 when they host the Ottawa 67’s at 2:00 pm. Ottawa was defeated 9-3 by the Barrie Colts on Saturday night.
