Wolves beat Attack in Overtime
The Owen Sound Attack were back in action tonight for a battle with the Sudbury Wolves. The Attack were looking to get back in the win column after losing 3-1 in North Bay on Monday. For the second time in three games, the Attack played an overtime period falling to Sudbury 3-2. Colby Barlow and Cedrick Guindon had goals for the Attack, with Taos Jordan, Deni Goure, James Petrovski, and Servac Petrovsky adding assists. Carter George made 28 saves in the game.
Both teams started the game looking to establish their game plans and set up some early momentum in their direction. Some excellent puck possession by Owen Sound applied the pressure early to the Sudbury defenders. Jake Crawford used his speed to create a good scoring chance forcing Wolves netminder Jakub Vondras to be sharp in the crease. Guindon made a quick rush up the ice that Vondras had to use his pad to make the stop. George continued his strong play to start the season by making several key stops early in the contest. 8 minutes into the game, the Wolves got the first Power Play of the game. Attack defenders did a great job of boxing out Sudbury attackers and not allowing the Wolves to gain momentum on the man advantage. Guidon broke into the Sudbury zone and nearly opened the score, Vondras was able to just keep the puck out with his skate. Barlow opened the scoring for the visiting team with a blast from the face-off dot putting the Attack ahead 1-0. Owen Sound continued to push and generate scoring chances, forcing Vondras to make several key saves. With 20 seconds to go in the period, the Attack got their first Power Play of the game. The opening frame ended with Owen Sound ahead 1-0 over Sudbury.
Early in the second period, Owen Sound was able to capitalize on their Power Play making it a 2-0 lead. Guidon beat Vondras over the pad to score his first of the season. Barlow showed his skill in the offensive zone with a great toe-drag scoring opportunity. The Wolves cut into the Owen Sound lead when a Djibril Toure shot got through a screen in front of the net and made it a 2-1 Attack lead. Owen Sound tried to gain momentum back in the game using their speed and forecheck to win puck battles. Crawford had a great opportunity to extend the Attack lead, but Vondras was up to the task. George made some key saves through traffic and on deflections to keep his team ahead 2-1. David Goyette looked to tie the game for the Wolves when he was awarded a penalty shot. George remained calm and made a huge glove save to stop the penalty shot attempt. Sudbury continued to gain momentum and had several good looks to tie the game. Toure got his second of the game for the Wolves with less than a minute to go in the period to tie the game at 2. The Attack enjoyed another late Power Play and looked to add a late goal. Owen Sound and Sudbury were tied at 2 after 40 minutes.
The Attack looked to retake the lead on the Power Play to start the third, but the score remained tied at 2. Vondras made an excellent stop on another Owen Sound one-timer attempt after some sustained Owen Sound pressure. Strong defensive play by the Attack kept the Wolves from taking the lead after an offensive push from Sudbury. Jackson Stewart looked to add energy to his Attack teammates with a big hit behind the Wolves net. George remained strong in the crease including saving a shot that went off the side of the goal. Late in the period, Owen Sound looked to pull ahead but Vondras was there to make the stop. The Attack and Wolves were tied after 60 minutes treating fans to some extra hockey.
Just over 30 seconds into the overtime period, Quentin Musty scored the overtime winner giving Sudbury a 3-2 win over Owen Sound.
Owen Sound will continue on the road tomorrow in Sault Ste. Marie against the Greyhounds at 7:00 PM. Owen Sound will be back at the Bayshore on Saturday, October 21 at 7:00 PM to face the Brantford Bulldogs. The Attack will then face the Kingston Frontenacs at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 22 at home. Sunday’s game will be the first Investment Planning Counsel Sunday where kids will be able to skate with the team following the game.
