Five Goal Third Lifts Attack Over Sting, Extending Point Streak to 13
It was a rare Tuesday night game at the Bayshore, as the Owen Sound Attack welcomed the Sarnia Sting. After a pair of scoreless periods it was the home Attack coming out on top, with an explosion of goals in the third period to claim a well earned 5-0 win.
You could tell it was not a regular game night, from the atmosphere in the building to the play on the ice, everyone involved needed some extra time to get accustomed to the Tuesday night game. The game was well over 10 minutes old before the teams combined to register double digit shots. The only players involved in the game that were sharp from start to (almost) finish were the guys between the pipes.
Both Attack goalie Nick Chenard and Sting goalie Benjamin Gaudreau, were sharp and at their best throughout the first two periods of action. It was Chenard, who was the busier of the two during the first 20 minutes, but as the Attack began to tilt the ice, Gaudreau stellar.
It was clearly going to be a first team to score wins type of game, but the question was who would score?
Owen Sound built on their momentum from a strong second period, and were finally able to break the ice early in the third, as it was Lorenzo Bonaiuto, trailing the 2-on-1 rush by Deni Goure and William Portokalis, who was able to slide a rebound through an over extend Gaudreau.
The Attack were then able to build on their lead around the halfway mark of the period, when Goure found Ethan Burroughs in front on the power play. Goure then made it 3-0 for the Bears, after taking an excellent stretch pass from Taos Jordan, before beating Gaudreau up stairs over the glove.
The Sting had some late power play opportunities to pull the game back within reach, but some solid penalty killing and goaltending held them off the board, and allowed both Servac Petrovsky and Cedrick Guindon to pot empty netters to seal the win.
Owen Sound travels to London Friday night for their second to last meeting of the season with the Knights. The win Tuesday night extends the current point streak to 13 games, and also pulls the team to just one win from the magic 30 on the season, a feat that the Attack would accomplished for 11 straight seasons.
The Attack return home Saturday night for their Hockey Fights Cancer Charity Game, which is another battle against the Sting. Tickets for Saturday and be purchased online or at the MacVicar and McComb Sutton Realty Box Office.
