Attack Use Late Push to Overcome Storm
There were a few storylines coming out of the Sleeman Centre and the Owen Sounds Attack 2-1 win over the Guelph Storm Friday night.
First, both teams combined for 15 power play opportunities! With that much time of having an extra guy on the ice, one would think that the score board would read like a lacrosse game. That was far from the truth. The teams not only combined for 15 power plays, but also went 0 for, on each and every one of those opportunities.
The lack of power play success, is both a tribute to each teams penalty kills, but also the two net minders in the game. Both Attack goalie Nick Chenard and Storm goalie Jacob Oster came up with some highlight reel saves, but ultimately were solid and made the saves their team need.
The game would be scoreless until well into the third period, when it was Storm overager Brayden Guy who broke open the scoring. It was shortly after a Storm power play, when Guy made a perfect finish on a 2-on-1 opportunity to crack the goose eggs, giving his team the lead with under ten minutes left in the game.
The Attack would fall short on one last power play opportunity just minutes after falling behind, and were forced to pull Chenard for a 6-on-5 advantage. It took almost a minute after Chenard left the net, but it was Nick Porco, who was able to bang home a rebound opportunity with just over a minute left on the clock, evening the game for Owen Sound.
The game looked heading for extra time, until Servac Petrovsky bust into the Storm zone on the left wing and let a shot go. The rookie centre’s shot deflected off a Storm defenders stick and fooled Oster, as the Attack took a 2-1 lead just 36 seconds after Porco tied the game.
It was far from a perfect game, as the Attack remain on the hunt to get there power play going away from the Bayshore, but the young Bears showed great resolve with a late game comeback.
The Attack and Storm will round out the home-and-home tomorrow night at the Bayshore, where Owen Sound will welcome a return of 500 fans! The game will be broadcast on Rogers tv Grey County, as well as streamed on OHL Live and CBC Gem!
