Attack statement on Humboldt tragedy
The Owen Sound Attack have issued the following statement regarding Friday evening’s tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League:
The Owen Sound Attack, along with the entire hockey community are shocked and beyond saddened at the tragic accident that occurred involving the Humboldt Broncos. We were devastated at the news of the injuries and fatalities and would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families of those involved. The junior hockey world is an extremely small one, and not one person that has played the game has not been touched by this tragedy in some way. Now, more than ever, we need to come together and offer our support to the players, staff, parents, billets, friends, and the entire community of Humboldt as we mourn the loss of so many.
Owen Sound Attack Head Athletic Therapist and Equipment Manager Andy Brown wrote a touching note that expressed just how close to home this tragedy hits not only the organization, but the entire Ontario Hockey League. It can be found below.
“Rode the bus home (Friday) night. Eight hours from Sault Ste. Marie to Owen Sound with my hockey family, the Owen Sound Attack. We lost a playoff game to tie our series with another hockey family, the Soo Greyhounds, many of whom I know personally. As we drove through the night experiencing a wide range of spring/winter conditions I was following the breaking news of the Humboldt Broncos and the tragic accident that resulted in the massive losses to their hockey family. I’ve rode buses in the OHL for 15 years through all conditions. Long, long hours. Great times with great people living the Canadian dream, working with great young players. Today, I find myself crying at the stories of these young men, coaches, and staff from Humboldt because all of these hockey families travelling around our great country are actually one massive hockey family. God bless those kids, staff members, and their families. We are all grieving with you. Safe travels to everyone in our hockey family as the playoffs continue.
The Attack and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds will pay tribute to the lives lost and those impacted by this tragedy prior to Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinal on Monday, Apr. 9 at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
