Attack Drop Saturday Night Showdown to Otters, Split Weekend Series
Four out of a possible six points this early in the season can be claimed as a victory for the Owen Sound Attack, as they fell 3-1 Saturday night down in Erie, splitting their weekend doubleheader with the Otters.
After scoring 12 goals in the pervious two games, the Attack’s offence couldn’t solve Marshall Nicole in the Erie net, as they only managed to get a single puck by the young goaltender. At the other end of the rink, Attack net minder Corbin Votary was solid all night, dealing with heavy traffic in his sight lines much of the night. Votary along with Attack starter Nick Chenard provided amazing goaltending through the Attack’s three game week, as the pair surrendered just six goals across the three games.
On the offensive side of the puck, Owen Sound struggled to consistently get their team speed going, as Erie played an in-your-face style, forcing the Attack to play a more chip and chase game. Though not generating much, Owen Sound did get on the the scoreboard first, as defensemen Cal Uens was able to find the twin with a great wrist shot off an offensive zone face-off.
The Attack would hold the 1-0 lead until late into the second period, when Otters defensemen Spence Sova made a great individual rush, before beating Votary with a shot under the blocker.
The teams would enter the final 20 minutes of play all even at 1-1, but it was the home Otters who managed to break the tie just over eight minutes into the third period. Just over a minute later Erie increased their lead to two, making it a much harder hill to climb for the Attack.
Though managing to gain some offensive zone pressure late in the game, Owen Sound was unable to generate any high danger opportunities, as the time would run out.
It was not the ideal finish to the week that the Attack wanted, but leaving with four of six points against Midwest division rivals is a key victory in of itself.
The Attack are back in action Thursday next week when they travel to Barrie to take on the Colts, and return home next weekend for another double header, with the Guelph Storm visiting the Bayshore Saturday night, while the Kingston Frontenacs come to the Scenic City for a Sunday matinee game.
