Attack Comeback Comes Up Short, Lose 4-3 to Generals
The Owen Sound Attack looked to start off 2025 the way they finished it; in the win column. Despite a valiant effort the comeback came up short and the Oshawa Generals came away with the 4-3 victory. Antonio Tersigni, Landen Hookey and Pierce Mbuyi had goals and Trenten Bennett made 24 saves in the loss, while Anthony Figliomeni, Lauri Sinivuori, Harrison Franssen and Brady Smith had goals for Oshawa.
The Attack came to play on Wednesday afternoon, skating hard and applying early pressure. It was the fourth line that would be rewarded just three minutes into the game when Easton Mikus, Antonio Tersigni and Rafik Varosyan got the cycle going and resulting in a second chance opportunity that Mikus slid across the ice to Tersigni who blasted it home to make it 1-0 for the Attack. Unfortunately, just 3 minutes later the Generals were able to tie it up and pull a goal ahead with two goals in the span of 24 seconds off the sticks of Anthony Figliomeni and Lauri Sinivuori, making the score 2-1.
Period 2 saw the Attack’s penalty kill put to the test giving up three power plays to the Generals potent power play units, but the Bears penalty killers were up to the task shutting down all three. After having a goal called back earlier in the period due to the play being offside, the Generals were the first to light the goal light in the middle frame when Harrison Franssen banged home the loose puck in the crease to make it 3-1 for the home side. The Attack got it right back, just 21 seconds later when Tristan Delisle set up Landen Hookey in the slot who wristed it home to bring the Attack within one, 3-2, a score that would hold until the intermission. The Hookey goal marked his 100th career OHL point.
Hard play continued to be the theme in the third period, with the Attack battling hard for every puck and making the Generals work for everything at both ends of the rink. Unfortunately, again it was Oshawa that would add to the score total first in the final frame, when Brady Smith buried the power play goal just over six minutes into the period. Like in the second period the Attack would not go away and the continued pressure and some sustained pressure on the power play resulted in a goal for the Bears as the Generals penalty expired midway through the period. Sam McCue took the puck at the top of the zone and slid it over to Michael Dec on the wing, who quickly fed it along the cross ice seam to Pierce Mbuyi who buried the one-timer past Gravelle to bring the Attack back within one, 4-3. Despite a flurry of chances during a late game power play this was as close as the Attack would get.
The Attack will now head to Guelph for a rematch for the second game in five days against the Storm on Friday night. The game can be seen on Rogers Television Georgian Bay, streamed on CHLtv or heard live on 560 CFOS Bear Radio. They will then return home on Saturday to take on the Niagara Ice Dogs at the Bayshore at 7pm.
