Attack Bounce Back and Take Season Series over Spirit
Four of six points on a three game road trip. It’s not perfect but the Owen Sound Attack will take it as they continue to build a gap and secure a playoff spot. After dropping the first two games of the road trip, one in overtime, the other in a shootout, Owen Sound came out hungry Saturday night, and claimed a big 5-1 win over the Saginaw Spirit.
With a power play that has struggled for long stretches this season, Saturday night provided a great opportunity for the Attack to break a slump, scoring twice on the man advantage to build a 2-0 lead. First it was Servac Petrovsky from in tight, as he showed quick hands to squeak the puck through Spirit goalie Andrew Oke. It was then Colby Barlow, after setting the team record for rookie scoring Friday night, the rookie tipped home a Sam Sedley point shot for his 24th on the season.
Saginaw would push as they tried to get back into the game, but it was Nick Chenard, coming off a shut out last Saturday in Owen Sound against the same Spirit team, who stood tall and kept the Attack with a two goal lead.
Owen Sound used the solid goaltending from Chenard late in the second period, as it was Logan LeSage and Ethan Burroughs scoring just over two minutes apart to build the Attack’s lead to 4-0. The home Spirit would break Chenard’s bid for a second straight shut out against them, as they earned a goal late in the second period.
Saginaw would push early in the third to try and get back into the game, but strong defence held the Spirit to the outside, before Burroughs added a second of the game on an empty net with under four minutes to play.
Owen Sound will return home to the Bayshore for a rematch with the Windsor Spitfires Wednesday night. Saturday night’s win moves the Attack within one point of the Guelph Storm for 5th in the conference, while also building a nine point lead over the 7th place Erie Otters.
