Attack Back in Win Column With Statement in Kitchener
Hard work and strong play always pay off eventually. Well for the Owen Sound Attack that eventually came Friday night in Kitchener, as the Bears thumped the Rangers 6-2 in a Mid-west Division affair.
Owen Sound had been playing good hockey for much of the month of February, but had little results to show for it. The bad luck did not deter the Attack from keeping up a strong work ethic, and they were rewarded early Friday night.
It took just 3:32 into the game for Servac Petrovsky to find some open ice to receive a breakaway. As the young Slovak bust into the offensive zone, he made no mistake going bar down to give the Attack an early lead. It has not been the first lead that the Attack held throughout the month, but this time they were able to quickly add to it. Just 58 seconds later, Ethan Burroughs received a drop pass from Deni Goure, before ripping home his 19th of the season, but more importantly give the Attack an early 2-0 lead.
Early in the second period, it looked like the Rangers would climb back into the game. With Owen Sound on the power play, an area of soreness all season, it was Kitchener’s Joseph Serpa who found the back of the net, cutting the score to 2-1.
As the Rangers pushed for the tying goal, it was Petrovsky, who once again found himself with an opening through the defence. Bearing down on the goaltender, with a quick snap of his wrists, Petrovsky netted his second of the game and restored the Attack’s two goal lead.
The play would open up for spurts throughout the remaining time of the second period, with both teams having grade “A” chances, but both Nick Chenard and Pavel Cajan stood tall.
It was a late period rush from Attack rookie Colby Barlow that began a scramble in the Rangers end. As the Attack regrouped and attacked with a second wave, Barlow found himself with space in front, and buried a centring pass from centre Cedrick Guindon.
As the game shifted to the final frame, it was a flip of the script from the last time the teams met, as it was Cajan standing tall stopping 62 shots and robbed the Attack of a victory. On Friday night, it was Chenard’s turn to repay the favour to the Rangers. Through the Attack goalie did not face as much rubber, the did face some high quality opportunities, turning aside all but two.
Much like period two, the third saw the Attack put up another two on the scoreboard, while the Serpa would net his second of the game late in the period.
For Owen Sound, not only was it the team that got going offensively, but key offensive players as well. Petrovsky broke a four game scoreless streak with his pair, while Barlow was able to snap a six games without scoring, as he also netted a pair. Goure was also able to get in the goal column for the first time in four games as well.
For the Attack they round out a four game week Saturday night when they host the Guelph Storm. It will be a special night, as it the game is the Woolley’s Warriors Charity game night. With a jersey auction, silent auction, bucket pass and chuck-a-puck, there is lots of activities and way fans can donate to a great charity founded by Attack captain Mark Woolley.
