A Shootout Win For The Wolves
The OHL Eastern Conference Sudbury Wolves made their only regular season visit to Owen Sound Sunday afternoon. The 4-5-1-0 Wolves entered the game having defeated the Oshawa Generals 5-2 Saturday night. Our 6-8-0-0 Attack were defeated by the Soo Greyhounds Saturday, 7-4.
On a gorgeous late fall Sunday afternoon – with most people having plenty of things to do to get ready for winter – it was great to see 2227 OHL fans stop by to watch the Wolves and Attack. And they put on a pretty good show.
These two hockey clubs seem to be pretty much evenly balanced. At least this day and at this time in the season. Neither would allow the other to get anything going. A couple of very talented players, a bunch of very good players and young guys learning their way. Goaltenders that can make the difference.
Scott Stajcer was in net for his Attack. Johan Mattsson for the Wolves.
This was a scorless game till 11:01 of the third period when Wolves points scoring leader Michael Sgarboosa snapped a Josh Leivo rebound past Scotty Stajcer. Just seconds earlier. Scott had made what was the game saver at the time on a one-timer by Leivo from Scotty’s left side.
The Owen Sound crowd was looking for something to get real excited about and their Captain did just that at 15:28. Mike Halmo is playing his overage season for his Attack. He has always been a pretty rugged kind of forward, but now has the ability to “back” his way through traffic while “creating” a little room for puck work. If you see him play, you will know what this means. Michael came out of Sudbury’s left corner, created some space and wristed his 8th of the season high glove side on Mattsson.
1-1 after regulation time. No scoring 4-on-4 in overtime. Off to the shootout.
The Attack shoot first.
Joseph Blandisi deked right and mostly lost the puck. No goal.
Mathew Campagna skated in very slowly with great purpose before snapping a goal 5-hole.
Daniel Catenacci tried 5-hole. No.
Kristoff Kontos deked right, went high with a backhand and missed.
Jarrod Maidens fired a nice wrist shot goal stick side.
Michael Sgarbossa won the game with a shot low stick side.
Final score Sudbury 2 – Owen Sound 1 SO. Final shots on net 34-30 Attack.
The Centennial Windows and Doors 3 Stars of the Game were:
1st Star – Johan Mattsson with 33 saves.
2nd Star – Mike Halmo.
3rd Star – Michael Sgarbossa with the Sudbury regulation time goal and the winner in the shoot-out.
The Dickie’s Clothing Hardest Working Attacker of the Game was Zack Nastasiuk.
The Kelsey’s Neighbourhood Bar and Grill Attacker of the Game was Scott Stajcer.
