UPDATE: WITH THE 202ND SELECTION IN THE NHL DRAFT, THE LOS ANGELES KINGS HAVE SELECTED OWEN SOUND ATTACK DEFENCEMAN JACOB FRIEND.
The Owen SOund Attack is pleased to announce that defenceman Jacob Friend has been selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 7th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Chosen with the 202nd overall pick on Saturday, June 25 at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York, Friend becomes the 49th member of the Owen Sound organization to be drafted by a National Hockey League team.
In just his first full year in the Ontario Hockey League, Friend immediately established himself as a physical presence on the Attack blue-line, leading the OHL in fighting majors for the 2015-16 season. The Bowmanville, Ontario, native fought 13 times over the course of the year while tallying a total of 106 penalty minutes to go along with his solid offensive production from the blueline.
Appearing in 54 of the team’s games, Friend scored four times and added 17 assists.
After having gone undrafted into the OHL, Friend was a re-entry player in this year’s NHL Draft, having not been selected in last year’s edition either.
The 6’2, 185 pound rear guard joins former defenders Damir Sharipzyanov and Kurtis MacDermid as products of the Owen Sound Attack who have gone undrafted in their first year of eligibility before being welcomed into the Los Angeles Kings organization.
The Attack would like to congratulate Jacob and his family on this tremendous accomplishment and wish him the best at Los Angeles’ upcoming rookie camp.
