Phillips and Team Canada kick off medal round
Owen Sound Attack defenceman Markus Phillips has a chance to do something in the spring that he couldn’t do during the fall.
As captain of Team Canada Red at the World Under 17 Challenge, Phillips’ squad failed to medal after falling 3-0 to Sweden in the bronze medal game.
Donning the national colours again though, and this time with the National Under 18 squad, Phillips and his teammates have a chance to get onto the podium in Grand Forks, North Dakota as the medal round begins today with a quarterfinal matchup with Switzerland
Canada, who wrapped up a perfect 4-0 mark in pool play by defeating Finland on Tuesday, is looking to get back on top of the tournament for the first time since claiming gold in 2013.
Their quest to the top of the podium will see them take on the 1-3 Swiss, whose only victory during the preliminary action came against the relegated Latvia.
Canada meanwhile, had a relatively easy time in Pool B, defeating Denmark 10-2, and then the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Finland each by a score of 3-1.
One of just three under-age players on Team Canada’s roster, Phillips has appeared in all four of Canada’s games, recording an assist in their tournament opening win over Denmark.
Phillips and Team Canada will take on the Swiss this afternoon with a 4:30pm puck drop which will be televised live on TSN2.
