Neely Cup- Day 3 Recap

The annual training camp scrimmage known as the Neely Cup continued Saturday at Winterhawks Skating Center. Two teams matchup in two periods of play, each counting as an individual game for the purposes of the standings. Here are today’s results:

First Matchup: Team Finley vs. Team Vernon

Game 1:
Adin Hill posted a shutout in net to lead Team Finley to a 3-0 win over Team Vernon in the first game of the day. Dominic Turgeon and Keegan Iverson staked Finley to a 2-0 lead, followed by a late empty net goal from Garrett Haar to seal the 3-0 win.

Game 2:
Team Vernon bounced back in Game 2 with a 5-0 shutout win. The victory came courtesy of goals by Nolan Kurylo, Riley Hayles, Chase De Leo on a penalty shot, Mitchell Mattson and an empty netter from Cam Kinsman. Michael Bullion earned the shutout in goal.

Second Matchup: Team Playfair vs. Team Morrow

Game 1:
The first meeting between Team Playfair and Team Morrow was a tight-checking affair that ended with Morrow winning 2-1, their first victory of the tournament. Adam Rossignol opened the scoring for Team Morrow, but Henry Crone tied the game for Team Playfair. Colton Veloso then scored the game-winner to give Morrow the 2-1 victory.

Game 2:
Day three wrapped up with Morrow winning 4-1 over Playfair. Garnett Roberts and Taylor Leier gave Morrow a 2-0 lead before Playfair got on the board with a goal from Henry Crone. But Owen Stout made it 3-1, with Leier adding an empty-netter for the 4-1 win.

Play resumes Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at Winterhawks Skating Center. Team Finley will take on Team Playfair for third place, while Team Morrow and Team Vernon will square off for first place.
