Five Must Watch First Half Winterhawks Games
The 2017-18 season began last Saturday with the Winterhawks coming away with a 7-4 win over the Everett Silvertips. While the season “officially” began last week, the real fun begins this Saturday with the Winterhawks home opener. The Hawks have a total of 36 home games this season, here are five from the first half of this year’s schedule that are must watch hockey.
Pacific Office Automation Opening Night
Saturday, September 30 – 6PM – vs Seattle – Buy Tickets
The Winterhawks begin their home schedule this Saturday at the Moda Center against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Seattle is coming off a championship winning season and are looking to repeat. First home game of the year? Check. Rival team? Check. Insanely loud crowd? Check. Saturday nights don’t get better than this.
Boeing Military Appreciation Night
Saturday, November 11 – 6PM – vs Tri City – Buy Tickets
If you like offense, then this is your game. These teams might end up being the two highest scoring offenses in the WHL. With NHL prospects Michael Rasmussen, Morgan Geekie and Juuso Valimaki on the Tri-City side, both teams feature plenty of big stars. This will be the first time these two teams meet this season, so expectations are high. It’s also Veterans Day, which makes it Boeing Military Appreciation Night at the Moda Center.
Hawks Fight Cancer
Saturday, November 18 – 6PM – vs Regina – Buy Tickets
This year’s Memorial Cup hosts make their lone appearance in Portland on this night. Many fans believe this could be a matchup we see in early May. The Pats enter the season with another talented roster, which should make this an entertaining night of hockey. This will be the Hawks last game before they head out on their Eastern swing, so this will be your last chance to watch live Winterhawks hockey until December 3rd. “Hawks Fight Cancer” is also this evening, a night to raise money to fight cancer and promote cancer awareness.

Les Schwab Teddy Bear Toss
Saturday, December 9 – 6PM – vs Everett – Buy Tickets
Perhaps the most anticipated regular season game all year is the Les Schwab Teddy Bear Toss. The event takes place after the first Winterhawks goal, when fans throw teddy bears onto the ice. Over 11,000 bears were thrown onto the ice last season after Skyler McKenzie’s opening goal. All those teddy bears are then distributed to several organizations in the Portland Metropolitan Area. It’s quite the night.

Toyota New Year’s Eve Party
Sunday, December 31 – 6PM – vs Seattle – Buy Tickets
Whenever the Hawks get together with the Seattle Thunderbirds, it’s always must watch hockey. When the game happens to fall on New Year’s Eve, you’d be crazy to miss out. After the game is done, fans get the opportunity to skate with Winterhawks players and countdown until midnight. There’s no better way for a Hawks fan to ring in the New Year.
