The Story:
Carter Sotheran (2G) and Portland’s potent power play helped the Winterhawks earn a hard-fought point in their third game in three nights, but a rested Seattle side took the extra with a 5-4 overtime victory at Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday.
Sawyer Mynio netted the dagger for the hosts at 3:59 of the extra frame.
Portland’s record now stands at 46-15-3-1 on the year (96pts, 2nd Western Conference).
Sotheran’s standout night started late in the first, as the Philadelphia Flyers prospect answered Antonio Martorana’s opening strike for Seattle to send the teams to the break knotted at one. Sotheran was at it again in the second, again netting a response goal with a highlight-reel effort, dangling past Sawyer Mynio and freezing Scott Ratzlaff long enough to execute a wraparound past his outstretched blocker hand.
With momentum in hand, Portland’s Josh Davies and Gabe Klassen tallied two power-play strikes exactly five minutes apart for a two-goal lead after 40 minutes. Luca Cagnoni picked up assists on both, first firing a shot-pass to the stick of Davies at the side of the net for a deflection tally, then setting up Nate Danielson in the left circle who earned the primary helper with a bullet pass to Gabe Klassen in the low slot.
The Hawks outshot the T-Birds by a whopping 56-35 margin throughout the night, but were largely undone by two goals in the third as the T-Birds carried a 15-9 shot advantage in the final 20. Up 4-2 entering the final frame, Portland wound up killing a 5-on-3 early in the period and conceded to Braeden Cootes and Jeremy Hanzel on consecutive power-play goals. The Hawks had a late power-play bid that carried over to OT, but couldn’t find a way to put a fifth past Ratzlaff, who finished with 52 saves on 56 shots.
The Winterhawks head into another busy stretch with three games in three nights to conclude their regular season next weekend.
