Big Stage Rivalry
After months of anticipation, the Battle on the Sound is finally here! The best rivalry in the WHL gets its due as Portland and Seattle face off at Climate Pledge Arena, home of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken. The Thunderbirds have hosted a game at CPA twice in the past two years, facing Everett (2021-22) and Spokane (2022-23) in consecutive seasons and earning a 1-1-0-0 record against those clubs.
This year’s edition of the I-5 Rivalry has been fairly lopsided, with the Winterhawks owning a 6-0-1-0 record against its favorite foe. After selling off prospects and picks by the handful en route to a WHL Championship last summer, a young Seattle side has struggled to find its footing and was eliminated from playoff contention after Spokane’s win on Saturday. Of course, none of that matters when these two clubs play – pride and bragging rights are always on the line and the stage is set for one of their best matchups yet.
Best in the U.S.
While the T-Birds had their postseason hopes dashed last night, the Winterhawks sealed their sixth U.S. Division title with a 5-3 win over Wenatchee. It’s Portland’s first division crown since 2020, with Everett(x2) and Seattle holding the top spot in the interim.
With the regular-season division championship comes a top-two seed in the Western Conference for the 2024 WHL Playoffs, and there’s little room for error in the fight for first. The B.C. Division champion Prince George Cougars hold a one-point lead over Portland, but the Hawks have played one fewer game, meaning they only need to worry about winning their four remaining games to come out on top. Three of those games are against Seattle, who would love nothing more than to spoil their rival’s top-seed hopes, especially tonight in front of a big crowd in an NHL barn. The Winterhawks have spent the last month passing test after test – they’ll have to bring their best to do so once again in tonight’s tilt.
