On The Rebound
A frustrating result in Game 1 saw the Hawks’ winning streak end at eight. But the beauty of playoff hockey is that the next opportunity is never far away. The Winterhawks get another crack at the Cougars fewer than 24 hours after a tough loss, with Game 2 providing a second chance to steal home-ice advantage before the series shifts to Portland for Games 3-5 next week. The score has gone right back to 0-0, and there’s plenty of momentum to be gained in the rematch tonight.
“It’s playoffs…you’ve just gotta have a short-term memory with it. The only way this game is a failure is if we choose not to learn from it.”

Traffic Jam
The Hawks generated double-digit shot totals in all three periods last night but couldn’t find a way past Josh Ravensbergen, who picked up a 33-save shutout in Game 1. Portland Head Coach/GM Mike Johnston pointed out in his postgame media availability that the Cougars’ defense did a good job of preventing Hawks forwards from reaching rebounds in front of the net, enabling Ravensbergen to limit the second- and third-chance opportunities and stifle Portland’s offensive pressure.
“In playoff hockey, it doesn’t really matter what the score was in a game that you lose or win. You’ve just gotta regroup and get ready for the next one.”

As the Winterhawks seek a more potent attack in Game 2, they’ll emphasize a greater net-front presence and more active sticks in an effort to cause chaos in front of the Cougars’ cage. Each player in Portland’s lineup has the capability to score from range, but in a tight battle like this one, they’ll have to get a greasy goal or two to strike back in PG.
