Best On Best
After dominating the Western Conference throughout the regular season, Portland and Prince George finally cross paths in the postseason. Separated by just one point atop the conference standings, the Winterhawks and Cougars breezed through the opening two rounds of the playoffs and are set to duke it out for a berth in the WHL Championship.
The two teams split their four-game season series 2-2, with each team winning once on the other’s home ice. In the postseason, Portland ranks second in the WHL in goals for (42) and first in goals against (16), while Prince George follows just behind with 40 goals for (4th) and 17 goals against (2nd), setting the stage for a showdown between two of the league’s best offenses AND defenses. Buckle up!
Hostile Territory
With Portland hosting Games 3-5 next week, finding a way to win on the road in Games 1 and 2 is crucial. To do so, they’ll have to quiet a vibrant Cougars crowd as the CN Centre is sure to be rocking for the start of the series. It’s the first time the Hawks have started a series on the road, but the veteran group is up to the task and already looking forward to bringing the action back to the Glass Palace next week.
“It’s just a matter of going in there and being the villain, just trying to suck the energy out of their crowd as soon as possible,” said defenseman Ryder Thompson. “Then coming back to Portland, it’s gonna be awesome. I haven’t been in a Western Conference Championship in front of our fans, so we’re looking forward to that and I know they’re gonna be loud.”
