Tyson Jugnauth signs WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement with Winterhawks
Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce the signing of Seattle Kraken prospect Tyson Jugnauth (D-’04) to a WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement.
The Winterhawks acquired Jugnauth’s WHL playing rights via trade yesterday; Portland sent a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft to the Kamloops Blazers to obtain his rights, and will now finalize the trade with additional picks going to the Blazers after Jugnauth’s signing. The 19-year-old will now leave the University of Wisconsin (NCAA) and join the Winterhawks this weekend.
Final trade details can be found below:
Portland receives:
- D – Tyson Jugnauth (’04)
Kamloops receives:
- 2025 2nd-round pick (conditional)
- 2026 2nd-round pick (via Brandon)
- 2024 3rd-round pick
- 2024 6th-round pick (conditional)
The Kelowna, B.C. native has produced 17 points in 45 games with Wisconsin over the last two seasons. His WHL rights originally belonged to the Swift Current Broncos, who selected him in the first round of the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft. He was then selected by Kamloops in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft upon re-entry to the draft process, but elected to attend Wisconsin.
“I’ve been watching him since he was 15 years old and immediately recognized him as a defenseman that plays the Portland style,” said Winterhawks President, General Manager, and Head Coach Mike Johnston. “We’re thrilled to welcome him and his family into our organization.”

Prior to his time in the NCAA, Jugnauth developed with the West Kelowna Warriors in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) from 2020 to 2022. He scored 13 goals and 54 assists for 67 points in 75 BCHL games. He was named the BCHL’s Top Defenseman in 2022 and was recognized as a First Team All-Star that same year after setting the Warriors single-season record with 41 assists as a defenseman.
Following that dominant 2021-22 campaign in the BCHL, Jugnauth was selected by the Kraken in the fourth round, #100 overall, of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, and has attended development camp in the PNW in each of the past two summers.
Jugnauth is the second player to go from the University of Wisconsin to the Winterhawks in this decade, joining defenseman Jack Dougherty. Dougherty signed with Portland in 2015 after earning an NHL contract with the Nashville Predators and is now in his eighth season of professional hockey.
