Welcome Back!
Hope the Holidays are treating you well, Hawks fans!
The boys are back in town after some quality time at home for Christmas as the midway point of the season approaches. The Hawks hit the break with a tough defeat, but have won five of their last six outings and boast the second-best point percentage in the Western Conference. Some time away from the rink has also helped a handful of Hawks heal up after missing games earlier this month, though netminders Jan Špunar and Luke Brunen continue to recover from lower-body injuries sustained over the past month and change.
Getting Familiar
Believe it or not, this is just the second meeting between Portland and Tri-City this year, and the first in Kennewick. The Hawks were dominant in their first matchup with a 7-0 win at the VMC back on October 15. A remarkable five-goal first period buoyed that effort as the Winterhawks rolled through October.
The Ams have struggled as of late, with losses in five of seven games in December. On the year, Jordan Gavin’s 36 points lead the Ams through 31 games while import newcomer and top 2024 NHL Draft prospect Max Curran has hit the ground running with 27 points through his first 30 games in North America.
After meeting just once in the first three months of the season, the Winterhawks and Americans will now duel five times in the remaining three with key divisional points on the line.
Wardrobe Change
After starting the year mainly wearing white sweaters at home and dark on the road, WHL clubs will now flip their standard attire for the back half of the campaign. That means black and red uniforms will feature heavily on home ice, while road games like tonight will mostly feature the Hawks in white.
For those superstitious about jersey colors, the Hawks have been solid no matter what they’ve worn, boasting an 8-5-0-1 record in black, 9-4-1-0 record in white, 2-0-0-0 record in red and a 1-1-0-0 showing in specialty jerseys (Friday the 13th & Holiday Sweater).
