The Story:
Robbie Fromm-Delorme and Luca Cagnoni each scored twice, Dante Giannuzzi stopped 21 of 22 shots and the Winterhawks picked up points for the seventh straight game with a 5-1 win over the Victoria Royals on Friday.
Portland’s power play continued its impressive recent production with three goals in six man-advantage opportunities.
The Hawks started hot with Fromm-Delorme’s eighth of the year just 5:20 into the contest. As the puck bounced between players in the offensive zone, Aidan Litke poked it free to a streaking Fromm-Delorme, who made no mistake with a slick backhander through the legs of Tyler Palmer. Cagnoni’s first of the game came just under a minute later on the power play as the top 2023 NHL Draft prospect wired a wrister into the top corner from range.
Cagnoni didn’t finish there, tacking on another PPG before the end of the frame with another long-distance shot that deflected off of a Royals defender at 14:28. Both clubs played scoreless hockey into the second period, but Fromm-Delorme completed his own double midway through the middle frame to make it 4-0 Portland. Kyle Chyzowski collected a loose puck in the corner and spun a quick pass to Fromm-Delorme in the slot, who outwaited Palmer before easily depositing his ninth of the season past his outstretched leg.
Victoria broke the shutout 5:12 into the third with Jake Poole’s 10th of the year, but Aidan Litke tacked on another insurance marker with another power-play strike late in the game to finish off the Hawks’ 5-1 victory.
Portland and Victoria square off again at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre tomorrow night at 6:05 P.M.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
“We talked a lot about our start coming into this building. It’s been tough in years past. They are a good team and play good systems and they’re really aggressive so the start is really important. That was a really big part of the win today. I just think that really built the foundation for the game and the guys really stuck to the plan. Overall it was a really solid game.”
Winterhawks goaltender Dante Giannuzzi
