Hawks Fall 3-1 to Spokane Sunday
The Portland Winterhawks (20-4-0-1) had a four-game winning streak snapped Sunday night, as the Spokane Chiefs (11-9-1-1) earned a 3-1 victory at the Rose Garden.
The Winterhawks remain in first overall in the WHL with 41 points.
The Chiefs opened the scoring with two goals in a span of seven seconds early in the first period, the first on a breakaway goal by Blake Gal at the 4:41 mark, the second goal by Anthony Bardaro seven seconds later to take a 2-0 lead.
Portland got one back just over three minutes later, when defenseman Derrick Pouliot took a shot from the point that went through traffic and got past Spokane netminder James Reid to make it 2-1 at the 7:54 mark. The Chiefs again made it a two-goal advantage at the 14:26 mark with a power play tally by Levko Koper.
The first period goals would stand as the lone goals of the game, as the two teams were scoreless in the second and third periods. Mac Carruth was in net for Portland, and finished with 34 saves on 37 Spokane shots. Reid got the win in net for the Chiefs, stopping 34 of 35 Winterhawks shots.
The Winterhawks will be back in action Wednesday night when they host the Everett Silvertips at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve. It’s the Great Airplane Toss that night, where fans throw paper airplanes at targets on the ice. There are numerous great prizes up for grabs, with fans having a chance at a $10,000 grand prize.
