Sting score 5 consecutive to top Saginaw 6-3
SARNIA – The Sarnia Sting rallied from behind scoring 5 consecutive goals and defeating the Saginaw Spirit by a score of 6-3.
The win for Sarnia is their second in as many contests; improving to 3-6 on the season. Shots on goal couldn’t have been closer with each team registering 29 a piece.
“It’s a good character win for us” said Sting head coach, Trevor Letowski. “We showed resilience tonight and I’m proud of those guys.”
“We need to continue to play hard and be a hard team to play against.” Letowski goes on to credit the Spirit, “That’s a pretty good team over there and this is a big win for us.”
After a slow first period with only 9 shots aside and no goals scored, it looked as though this was going to be a goaltender’s dual.
Early in the second period, Sarnia rookie Nikita Korostelev opened the scoring with his first goal of the season beating Red Wings draft pick Jake Paterson. Less than a minute later Saginaw’s’s Kristoff Kontos beat Taylor Dupuis to knot the game up at 1.
The game seemed to be slipping away from the Sting as Saginaw scored two more in a matter of 3:00 with goals from Bratina and Stevens. Following a solid penalty kill – Sting forward Vladislav Kodola outwaited the defenseman and set up Anthony DeAngelo for a back door tap-in, cutting the spirit lead to just 1.
Spirit forward Terry Trafford was unable to extend their lead as he was denied by Dupuis on a penalty shot on a great save. With momentum on their side, the Sting powerplay capitalized on two opportunities late in the second period. Nikolay Goldobin notched his 7th of the season to tie it up before Korostelev potted his second of the game, giving his team a 4-3 lead heading into the second intermission.
The Sting were able to extend their lead in the third, capitalizing on two opportunities in a matter of 0:42 with goals from Patrick White and Nikolay Goldobin.
Goldobin finished the night with two goals and one assist giving him 10 points in as many games this season. It was also an impressive outing for Sting rookie Nikita Korostelev netting the first two goals of his OHL career and picking up the First Star of the Game. Highly touted defenseman Anthony DeAngelo finished the game with one goal and three assists to earn Second Star honours in tonight’s game. The four point night for DeAngelo gives him 14 on the season and restores his lead among the top scoring defenseman in the OHL. The Third Star of the game was awarded to Sting forward Bryan Moore. Moore added a helper on the crucial second Sting goal and played an all-around solid game.
Sting look to make it three in a row as they take on the Owen Sound Attack in Friday Night’s PINK OUT game. Game-time 7:05 p.m.
