SARNIA, ON – The Sarnia Sting outplayed and outscored the Memorial Cup hosts on Friday night – downing the Spitfires by a score of 5-3 in front of 3,643 fans at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
Aside from being treated to a quality hockey contest, fans were entertained by the ZOOperstars! during both the first and second intermissions thanks to Fenwick Motors and AG Event Graphics.
Prior to puck drop, the Sting honored overage skaters with a jersey presentation and tribute to each of their careers in the Ontario Hockey League. As a finishing touch, the Sting broadcasters named OA players Jeff King (1), Jaden Lindo (2) and Kevin Spinozzi (3) the three stars of the game.
Jeff King opened the scoring for the Sting at 9:32 of the second period after a scoreless first frame. The unassisted goal was King’s career-high 14th of the season.
Graham Knott kicked off a stretch of three goals in 2:14 with his 15th of the season. The Blackhawks’ second round pick got in alone on Fazio and slid the puck through his pads to oust the Sarnia-native’s shutout bid.
Jaden Lindo fired home his 21st of the season just 1:09 later after taking a centering feed from draft-eligible centreman, Adam Ruzicka. Anthony Salinitri was credited with the second assist on the go-ahead goal.
With just 0:11 remaining in the second, Hayden McCool evened the score with his 7th of the season assisted by Jeremy Bracco.
Vilardi gave the Spitfires a 3-2 lead with his 29th of the season coming just 0:20 into the final stanza. The powerplay marker was assisted by Jeremy Bracco and Aaron Luchuk.
Drake Rymsha sparked the Sting comeback with the game-tying goal at 12:52. The sniper took a slick no-look feed from linemate Jordan Kyrou and deposited the puck beneath the crossbar. Anthony Salintri picked up the secondary assist on Rymsha’s 33rd of the season.
Adam Ruzicka picked up his 25th of the season before Rymsha added his second of the night at 18:19 to round out the scoring.
