SARNIA, ON – The Sarnia Sting skated away with a 5-2 win over the Mississauga Steelheads in front of 2,742 fans on Friday night. With the win, the Sting are now 9-3-1-0 through 13 games and remain atop the OHL’s Western Conference Standings.
It was a physical affair from start to finish, with plenty of scoring chances at both ends of the ice. Justin Fazio was stellar in goal for the Sting, turning aside 34 of 36 shots faced; taking home the win and first star honors in the process. Matt Mancina went the distance in goal for the Steelheads; making 24 saves on 29 shots.
Midway through the opening stanza, Anthony Salinitri capitalized on a breakaway opportunity to give the Sting their first lead of the game. Ryan McGregor was credited with the lone assist on Salinitri’s 5th goal in the last 3 games.
Damian Bourne got the Steelheads on the board at 6:05 of the second period; banging home a short-handed rebound to tie the game at 1’s. Ryan McGregor restored the Sting lead less than three minutes later with a short-handed goal of his own. The breakaway goal was unassisted.
Jeff King would score the eventual game-winning goal less than two minutes into the third period when his point shot found its way through a crowd and into the back of the net.
At 6:40 of the third period, Sarnia-native Franco Sproviero scored to make it 4-1 for the home side. The goal was Sproviero’s second of the season and first here in Sarnia. Sean Josling and Filip Helt were awarded the assists.
Aidan McFarland would narrow the margin for the Steelheads but Louis Latta responded with his first career OHL goal to round out the scoring. Troy Lajeunesse and Jordan Kyrou were credited with the helpers.
The Sting are back in action tomorrow night at Budweiser Gardens as they clash with the Knights for the second time this season. The team returns home to take on the North Bay Battalion on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM in the annual Halloween Game, presented by Value Village. Game Details
