FLINT, MI – The Sarnia Sting fell to the Flint Firebirds on Saturday night by a score of 7-5. The loss drops the Sting back to 8th place in the Western Conference with a 26-24-5-1 record.
Justin Fazio was busy all night, as he faced 48 shots in the loss while turning aside 42 of them. Garrett Forrest stopped 31 of 36 shots faced in the win.
Jaden Lindo got the Sting on the board first in this one at 4:49 in the first, capitalizing on a big rebound created by Troy Lajeunesse on the power-play for his 16th goal of the season. Brady Hinz was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.
At 12:58 of the first, Ryan Moore evened the game for the Firebirds while on a 5 on 3 power-play for his 33rd goal of the season. With 14 seconds remaining in the 1st, Jalen Smereck took a high sticking penalty and the Sting took advantage, as Jeff King found Jordan Kyrou in the slot where he buried a one timer with just one second remaining to give the Sting a 2-1 lead. Jordan Ernst earned the second assist on the play.
The Firebirds would even the game 2:19 into the 2nd period off a goal from Ty Dellandrea during 4 on 4 play. C.J Clarke gave Flint their first lead of the game at 4:15, finding a puck in traffic to score his 7th goal of the year. Clarke would later extend the Firebirds lead to 4-2 at 9:08 for his 2nd goal of the game.
Anthony Salinitri responded for the Sting at 10:26, when Jeff King brought the puck in on a 3 on 1 and found Salinitri out front to cut the Firebirds lead to 4-3.
The Firebirds would regain their 2 goal lead early in the 3rd period, as Nicholas Caamano would score his 27th of the season at 1:13 to make it a 5-3 game.
At 5:37, the Sting would make it a 5-4 game following a bad bounce that saw the puck go off a Firebirds defenceman and end up in the back of their net. Jordan Kyrou was credited with his 2nd goal of the game on the play. At 11:32 Adam Ruzicka buried his 21st goal of the season unassisted to tie the game at 5’s.
With just 1:02 remaining in the game, Hunter Holmes got a shot through traffic to give the Firebirds a 6-5 lead. The Sting would pull Fazio for the extra attacker, but Flint capitalized as Maurizio Colella found the empty net to seal the game 7-5.
