Wrap-up | Sting Sweep 4-game Weekend
It was a big week for the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club, winning all four contests and claiming sole possession of first place in the OHL’s West Division. With a commanding 11-4 win over the Saginaw Spirit on Monday afternoon, the Sting were the fourth team in the league to clinch a berth in the 2016 Playoffs.
The Sting opened up the 4-0-0-0 week with a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over the Soo Greyhounds on Wednesday night at the Essar Centre. Travis Konecny and Jordan Kyrou were the goal scorers in that contest, while Justin Fazio turned aside 25/26 to earn the win in goal.
The Sting continued to roll on Friday night in Guelph, defeating the Storm by a final score of 6-2 at the Sleeman Centre. Travis Konecny was the game’s first star, tallying 2 goals and 1 assist while Justin Fazio turned aside 35 shots in the win.
The club returned home on Saturday night to take on the London Knights for the last time this season. For the first time in 3 seasons, the Sting came out victorious, topping the Knights by a score of 2-1 in front of a capacity crod of 4,522 at the SSEC. Matt Mistele recorded the eventual game-winner on a powerplay in the third period.
The Sting wore specialty purple jerseys in support of DIFD night. These jerseys are up for auction here.
The four-game weekend was wrapped up with an 11-4 win over the Saginaw Spirit on Monday afternoon at the SSEC. Monday’s game was the annual Family Day Game presented by RBC and included a plethora of entertainment for the whole family. Matt Mistele recorded the fourth 5-goal game in Sting history, and nearly 500 fans took in the skate with the Sting following the final buzzer.
Sting Hockey – presented by RBC, continues on Friday night at the SSEC when the Sting take on the visiting Flint Firebirds. The team will be giving away 2015-16 team posters upon exit on Friday night. Fans can bring these posters to the Home Depot on Saturday afternoon (12:30-2:30) to have them signed by the team during the annual Kids’ Workshop.
Then, on Sunday afternon the Sting host the Soo Greyhounds on Home Depot Day at the SSEC. Puck drop on Sunday is scheduled for 2:05 PM. Tickets
