RECAP: Frontenacs fall short against the Bulldogs
On a cold Saturday night in Kingston, the Frontenacs’ organization was honouring arguably the greatest player in our franchise history. Bernie Nicholls’ was in attendance at Leon’s Centre to see his #16 take its rightful place in the rafters alongside some other Kingston icons. Bernie dropped the puck prior to tonight’s game, which saw our divisional rival Brantford Bulldogs in the building.
The Frontenacs held opening serve in this one, with multiple early chances that were held off by Bulldogs netminder Matteo Drobac. The Bulldogs responded strong, getting on the board first with a goal from Masen Wray (3), which was followed up with a powerplay goal from Patrick Thomas (4) after two huge blocked shots from Fronts forward Nathan Poole.
In the middle frame, the Frontenacs came out strong looking to respond to the two goal lead, but Matteo Drobac once again was up to the task in the early going of the period. The Fronts would eventually break through though, as fifteen minutes into the second Jacob Battaglia tipped home a Quinton Burns shot from the point for his 9th of the campaign. Brantford was quick to respond however; finding the back of the net less than three minutes later when Florian Xhekaj (10) went coast to coast and beat Mason Vaccari over the shoulder to carry his Bulldogs to a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
In the third, the black and gold pushed hard to get back into the game, but the Bulldogs shut it down; denying the Fronts at every turn. In the dying minutes of the game it was Jorian Donovan (5) sending the puck the length of the ice and finding the Frontenacs’ empty net to seal the deal for Brantford; as they skated away with a 4-1 victory.
