5 Things That Stood Out at Day 2 of Training Camp
Day 2 of Kingston Frontenacs training camp has ended. Here are five takeaways from today’s sessions.
Veteran Line Dominant
Although Lucas Edmonds is new to the OHL, he brings a ton of experience with him from his time in Europe. He was put on a line with returning Frontenacs Francesco Arcuri and Jordan Frasca for the two scrimmage sessions on Wednesday. The trio combined for six goals throughout the day including four from Frasca. If the veterans continue to put up those numbers, Head Coach Luca Caputi may have already found one of his scoring lines to start the season.
1st Rounders Looking Strong
Each of Kingston’s last two opening round picks had a strong performance throughout the day. Some would argue that putting them both on a line with Shane Wright would help anyone look strong, but Paul Ludwinski and Matthew Soto didn’t need Wright’s help. Ludwinski scored a pair of goals in the morning session and dazzled with his hand’s countless other times throughout session two. Matthew Soto got stronger as the day went on. By the end of the day, he was creating scoring chances and looking confident at his first OHL camp.
Thibodeau and Stewart Making a Case
Christopher Thibodeau and Jackson Stewart are giving the coaching staff something to think about with their play on day two. Thibodeau scored a pair of goals in the morning scrimmage, and followed that up with a gritty, physical performance during the evening session. Stewart was physical all day. By the end of the second session, he had players looking over their shoulders and second guessing their decisions to go into the corner after a puck. Both players were able to impact the game in their own way.
Compete Level in Midseason Form
If you thought an 18-month layoff would slow things down for training camp, you were wrong. The pace was excellent all day long, but it was the physicality and competitiveness that stuck out the most. Quinton Burns, Jackson Stewart, Braden Haché, and Nathan Poole all had massive hits throughout the day. The morning session went penalty free, but there were several power plays in the evening session as tensions grew between teams. Gage Stewart made several desperation saves in the morning session showing how he valued every save. In the evening session we even saw Chris Longo pull Mason Vaccari for an extra attacker to try and tie the game late. For many of the players, there is much more that two points on the line and it showed.
All Tied Up
After a long day of camp, Team Robertson and Team Stewart both came away with a victory setting up a rubber match at 9 AM Thursday morning. It will be the last on ice session of training camp and it provides one last opportunity for the players to make an impression.
