Winterhawks Weekly: Portland’s point streak hits eight games
The Winterhawks hopped on the ferry for two games in Victoria last weekend and left with two wins, topping the Royals 5-1 and 7-4 on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to stretch their point streak to eight games.
With two wins in tow, the Hawks return home for three home games this week, including Hawks Fight Hunger Night on Tuesday, Hometown Heroes Night on Friday and Women of the Rose City Night on Saturday!
Hot Hawks:
- Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme jumped into the top-10 in league scoring with five points over the weekend, tallying twice on Friday and posting another goal and two helpers on Saturday.
- Forward Aidan Litke erupted for a team-high six points in Victoria. The Winnipeg, Man. native potted a goal and an assist on Friday, then notched his first career four-point game (1G, 3A) on Saturday to stretch his point streak to five games (2G, 7A).
- Forward Kyle Chyzowski pushed his point streak to five games with two helpers on Friday and a power-play goal on Saturday. The Hawks’ alternate captain has points in 12 of 16 games played this season.
- Forward Gabe Klassen posted three points over the weekend, including his team-leading 14th goal of the year on Saturday. Klassen’s goal-scoring ranks tied for fourth in the league, and he is the only WHL skater with more goals than games played (among skaters with 10+ games).
- Defenseman Ryan McCleary picked up a helper on Friday and a goal and an assist on Saturday to extend his career-best point streak to six games (3G, 5A).
- Defenseman Luca Cagnoni put up two power-play goals on Friday and an assist on Saturday to boost his point streak to five games (4G, 5A). Cagnoni leads all Winterhawks defensemen with seven goals and 10 helpers through 16 games this year.
Play of the Week:
The Hawks tallied 12 goals in two games last week, including four power-play goals for the WHL’s top-ranked power-play unit. This one, finished off by Kyle Chyzowski, was as efficient as they come. After Chyzowski wins the initial faceoff to the right, Marcus Nguyen retrieves the puck for Ryan McCleary at the right point. McCleary then feeds Aidan Litke across the blue line, who then fires a perfect seam pass back to Chyzowski for a one-timed blast into the net just seven seconds into the man advantage. ⤵️
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 5 at Victoria 1 (Friday):
Robbie Fromm-Delorme and Luca Cagnoni each scored twice, Dante Giannuzzi stopped 21 of 22 shots and the Winterhawks picked up points for the seventh straight game with a 5-1 win over the Victoria Royals on Friday.
Portland 7 at Victoria 4 (Saturday):
Aidan Litke posted a career-best four points (1G, 3A) as the Winterhawks blitzed the Victoria Royals for a 7-4 win at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Saturday. Seven different skaters scored for Portland and goaltender Jan Špunar picked up 21 saves on 25 shots for his fifth win in six starts with the Hawks.
