The Story:
Carter Sotheran’s second goal of the night at 15:55 of overtime helped the Winterhawks complete a remarkable comeback for a 4-3 win over the Everett Silvertips in Game 3 of their second-round playoff series on Monday night.
Portland erased a three-goal deficit to force overtime and grabbed a 3-0 stranglehold on the seven-game series with the victory. The win marked the Winterhawks’ seventh in a row to start the postseason, tying a Club record for consecutive playoff victories.
Late in a tense first overtime period, Sotheran played a give-and-go with Gabe Klassen before wiring a one-timer through traffic from the blue line that ricocheted off the glass behind the net, off the back of Silvertips goaltender Tyler Palmer and across the line. The goal came 15:55 into the fourth frame as the last of four unanswered Winterhawks goals in their win.
Riding the energy of the home crowd, Everett grabbed quick control in the first with goals from Kaden Hammell and Beau Courtney, separated by just 61 seconds in the waning minutes of the opening frame. Ben Hemmerling then picked up where his teammates left off with a second-period strike just 18 seconds in to make it 3-0 Silvertips.
From there, though, Portland went to work with the man-advantage. First, Sotheran capitalized on a rush chance for his first of the night and third of the playoffs, wiring a quick release past the shoulder of Palmer on the power play at 3:14. Ten minutes later, Klassen brought his team within a goal on a delayed penalty sequence, hammering home a one-timer from the right circle.
Trailing by one, the Winterhawks opened the third period on another power play and quickly took advantage on Kyle Chyzowski’s sixth of the playoffs and fifth of the series just 42 seconds into the frame. Nate Danielson fed a wide-open Klassen in the left circle, who sent a shot-pass to Chyzowski at the back post for the tap-in tally. But despite the scoreline holding until overtime, the third period featured plenty of back-and-forth chances, including a penalty shot for Everett’s Carter Bear that Jan Špunar denied with his blocker hand. Portland also killed three penalties in the final frame to keep the Tips at bay.
Špunar finished with a stunning 44 saves for his own seventh straight win between the pipes, while Palmer turned aside 46 pucks in Everett’s loss.
Game 4 is set for Friday at 7:05 P.M. at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett.
