Alumni Konowalchuk, Barr accept coaching positions in the American Hockey League
Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to share that alumni Steve Konowalchuk and Dave Barr have accepted coaching positions in the American Hockey League (AHL) ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Konowalchuk, 50, becomes the newest Associate Head Coach of the Colorado Eagles, AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. He recently served as the head coach of the Red Deer Rebels the last two seasons, owning a 88-38-5-5 record. The Salt Lake City, Utah native previously held NHL assistant coaching positions with the Anaheim Ducks (2017-18) and Colorado Avalanche (2009-11) and coached the Seattle Thunderbirds for six seasons from 2011 to 2017. This year will mark his 12th season behind the bench in a coaching capacity.
Prior to his coaching tenure, Konowalchuk skated two seasons in Portland from 1990 to 1992 and scored 196 points in 136 games. He received the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Player of the Year in 1992 before turning pro and was recognized as a WHL First-Team All-Star and a CHL Second-Team All-Star that same season. He dressed in 790 NHL games before retiring as a player following the 2005-06 season.

Barr, 62, has accepted an assistant coaching role with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. Barr spent the last two seasons coaching overseas with the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian ICE Hockey League. Per the Chicago Wolves’ release, the Toronto native will primarily handle the team’s defense and penalty kill.
Barr has been an assistant coach with six NHL teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, and San Jose Sharks. He operated as the Head Coach and General Manager of the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League from 2003 to 2008 and held numerous titles with the Houston Aeros of the IHL/AHL from 1997 to 2003, concluding his tenure as President and General Manager.
He played 27 games for Portland during the 1979-80 season before he was traded to the Lethbridge Hurricanes where he finished his junior career. Barr enjoyed 13 seasons playing in the NHL before transitioning to the coach prior to the 1995-96 season.
