Bantam Draft Preview: Brad Davis from Manitoba Checks In
In the days leading up to the WHL’s Bantam Draft this Thursday, Winterhawks Play-by-Play Announcer Todd Vrooman has caught up with the provincial heads of scouting to get an understanding of the decision-makers who’ll help guide Mike Johnston and Matt Bardsley at the Draft. This time, Todd heard from Manitoba’s Brad Davis, who helped scout players like Winnipeg product Cody Glass.
Todd Vrooman: Can you tell us a bit about your background in hockey and with the Winterhawks?
Brad Davis – Winterhawks Scout: I started scouting for the Winterhawks ten years ago and was excited to be a part of the organization and very thankful to Matt Bardsley for giving me the opportunity. When I first walked into the Memorial Coliseum, I could not believe the pictures of past players and history of the organization which excited me even more. With the great talent on board with the Hawks, I try to listen and take it all in.
Todd: What sorts of things drive you as a scout?
Brad: With the past experience, professionalism, and knowledge that guys like Mike Johnston, Kyle Gustafson or even previously Travis Green or Garry Davidson pass on to us, I do push myself to work hard and try to meet the needs of the hockey club. In the end, the goal is to win another Memorial Cup and add to the great organization that the Hawks are and have been in the past. I am proud to wear the Hawks colors and be surrounded by great people who have a ton of passion for the game.
Todd: What are you guys looking for in players, and how does Manitoba look this season for the Bantam Draft?
Brad: As a staff we look for intelligence, a competitive player, stick skill and speed. Mike wants to play a high tempo, puck possession game so you need these qualities and have to be driven to succeed. The majority of my scouting is in Manitoba and with the Bantam Draft in May, I feel this year it is top heavy with a few players but not as strong overall. There should be 25-35 players taken in the draft from Manitoba which is usually the norm.
