Stephenson and Pats Shock Warriors in Moose Jaw
First Period
As expected, the sixth meeting between the Pats and Warriors opened with a physical tone, though without the nastiness of their last game. The Warriors jumped onto the scoresheet first after the Pats killed off their first penalty of the game, Kirk Johnson took a one-time pass from Sam Fioretti and ripped it past Nick Schneider to the far side of the Pats’ goal. The Warriors kept up the pressure, registering the first nine shots of the game and holding the Pats off the shot clock for eight minutes. The Blue and White didn’t need many opportunities to get on the board as with their first powerplay of the game, Boston Leier scored his 20th of the season on a snap shot to the short side of the net. The Pats started to get their momentum rolling, but couldn’t break the deadlock with a 1-1 score after one.
Second Period
With an early powerplay the Pats had opportunities to take the lead, but Justin Paulic came up with a pair of great saves to hold the score to the 1-1 tie. The Warriors would get back to how they played in the first period and were rewarded with three unanswered goals in the middle frame. Brayden Point started it off, tipping a Jesse Forsberg point shot past Schneider to give Moose Jaw the lead back. Then, with a delayed penalty coming, Alexander Chirva snuck the puck to the back of the Pats’ goal to put the Warriors up by two. Once again on the powerplay, Point cut across the front of the net and went bar-down on a great shot, setting up the Warriors with a 4-1 lead. Once again on the penalty kill, the Pats would catch a break as Leier and Chandler Stephenson came in on a two-on-one with Stephenson making a great play to control a pass in his skates and score his league-leading fifth shorthanded goal of the season to bring the Pats back into the game, down 4-2 after forty.
Third Period
Regina looked to erase the deficit early in the third with some pressure to start, including a powerplay, but couldn’t find a way to beat Justin Paulic in the Moose Jaw net. Despite the early frustrations, the Pats continued to carry the play and would start clawing back in. Chandler Stephenson knocked the puck over to Dyson Stevenson who’s shot fluttered into the air and over Paulic into the goal. Still trailing by one, Stephenson continued to shoulder the load and after a nice backhand feed from Jesse Zgraggen, pulled the puck across the mouth of the goal and tucked it past Paulic on the backhand to tie the game, 4-4.
Overtime/Shootout
The Blue and White brought the attack into overtime and had two great chances to end the game when Stephenson couldn’t bang in his hat-trick marker and Boston Leier was robbed twice by Paulic after a bouncing puck came in front. Leier would get it back in the shootout after bobbling the puck, he got the puck across the goal and buried it. Torrin White would extend things, but Stevenson got the Pats back in the lead with an awkward goal through the five hold. Nick Schneider came up with the final stop against Travis Brown and the Pats stole a 5-4 win in Moose Jaw
