PREVIEW
The Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors compete in a classic Trans-Canada Highway Clash on New Year’s Eve, marking the fourth of eight meetings this season. The Pats are 1-1-1 against the Warriors this season, with their last meeting ending in overtime (OTL, 4-3) on December 14 at the Brandt Centre.
For the Pats, they are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Eastern Conference’s first place Saskatoon Blades on Saturday despite outshooting their opponent 34-25. The Pats got two second period tying goals thanks to Zackary Shantz and Zach Pantelakis. Julien Maze tallied two assists and Kelton Pyne made 20 saves in his eighth straight start. On special teams, the Pats were 0-5 on their power play and 2-3 on their penalty kill.
The Pats are now 1-1 in their second-half schedule and 3-2-2 in their last seven contests, posting an even goal differential during that time (25GF-25GA).
Meanwhile, the Moose Jaw Warriors are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday at home. Connor Schmidt and Pavel McKenzie scored Moose Jaw’s goals while Brady Smith made 28 saves. Moose Jaw outshot Brandon 37-33. The Warriors went 1-5 on their power play and 2-4 on their penalty kill.
The Warriors have outshot their opponent in two straight games despite dropping both of them. The Warriors began their first half schedule with a 5-2 loss to Saskatoon after finishing the first half with wins over Regina (OTW, 4-3) and Brandon (SOW, 5-4).
WHO TO WATCH
Zach Pantelakis has been red hot for the Regiment, recording a goal in three straight games heading into tonight’s action. In addition, Zackary Shantz has 10 points (3G-7A) over his last eight games.
Rilen Kovacevic is having a career season for the Warriors, recording 36 points (20G-16A) in 29 games. The 20-year-old forward from Kelowna, BC has points in eight straight games (7G-7A-14PTS).
