Road Trip Begins in Edmonton
Head-to-Head
In 2011-12, the Regina Pats (0-2-0-0) held a surprising 4-0 record against the eventual WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings (1-0-0-0). In 2012-13, the future Eastern Conference Champions exacted a measure of revenge by winning three of the teams’ four matchups and outscoring the Pats 23-6. Carson Samoridny leads returning Pats in scoring against the Oil Kings after he totaled 5 points (3G, 2A) in eight games last season (five with Calgary). Defenceman Cody Corbett leads returning Oil Kings against the Pats as he picked up 7 points (1G, 6A). Heading into tonight’s contest, the Pats lost two straight to the Swift Current Broncos on Opening Weekend while the Oil Kings came out on top in their Home Opener. Tonight’s game can be heard on 620 CKRM starting at 6:35 p.m.
Lead Up: Pats Come Up Short in Swift
It was a strong bounce-back effort for the Blue and White on Saturday, but the Pats came up on the wrong side of a 3-2 score in Swift Current. Teagan Sacher was strong between the pipes, making 29 saves, but the Pats couldn’t find a late tying goal. The Broncos scored three powerplay goals including Graham Black’s winner in the third period.
Quick Start
Chandler Stephenson made his presence felt in short order after returning from the Washington Capitals. The forward picked up a goal and an assist on the powerplay in his first game back with Regina. The Saskatoon, SK native was a 3rd Round pick of the Caps in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Leadership Group
Prior to Saturday’s game against Swift Current, the Pats named their captains for the 2013-14 season. 18-year old defenceman Kyle Burroughs (7th RD NYI) was named Captain of the team. Meanwhile forwards Dyson Stevenson, Morgan Klimchuk (1st RD CGY) and Chandler Stephenson (3rd RD WSH) were named Alternate Captains.
Success in a Tough Building
The Oil Kings hold an impressive 55-11-2-4 on home ice the past two seasons. Over that same time-frame, the Pats have won three of their last four games (2-0 in 2011-12, 1-1 in 2012-13).
Who to Watch on Edmonton
Forward Henrik Samuelsson returned from Phoenix Coyotes Training Camp in time for the Regular Season and got things started with a bang. Samuelsson scored once and added three assists in Edmonton’s 7-3 win over Calgary. The 19-year old totaled 80 points (33G, 47A) in 69 games last season.
