Pats Fall to Bronco Powerplay in OT
Pats 2 – Broncos 3 OT
Game Recap
First Period
The Pats got off to a solid start in a game featuring plenty of flow with both coaches rolling four lines throughout the opening twenty. The penalty kill was only called upon to take care of one disadvantage and did so to help get the Pats into the break tied at zero with the Broncos. Shots in the first sat in favour of Swift Current, 8-5.
Second Period
After a first period largely devoid of special teams, the second period was busy in that regard. The Pats started things off by breaking their oh-for-twenty streak on the powerplay. Chandler Stephenson banged in a puck on the doorstep to give the Pats a lead. The Broncos took control of the powerplay numbers with back to back goals on the man advantage. First it was Graham Black on a great solo effort, sniping the top corner to get the puck by a screened Matt Hewitt. The Broncos second goal was a great example of team passing as Adam Lowry found Coda Gordon to the side of the net for the tip in marker giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead through forty minutes.
Third Period
The Pats came out in the third looking for an equalizer and it came during a four-on-four opportunity. Stephenson fanned on a pass attempt for Dyson Stevenson, but caught up to his own feed. He then wristed the puck by Eetu Laurikainen to bring the Pats even. Late in the game, the Pats faced adversity having to kill off a penalty to Colton Jobke to force overtime with the score still tied at two.
Overtime
Regina battled through the remaining thirty seconds of Jobke’s penalty, but ended up on the kill again late in the extra frame. This time, the high powered Bronco powerplay would strike for the third time of the contest when Gordon popped home a bouncing rebound to give Swift Current the 3-2 extra time victory.
